What does the future look like at quarterback for Notre Dame?

For the next few seasons, the belief and hope is it will be Tyler Buchner leading the way for the Irish. The longer-term answer isn’t as certain.

Notre Dame has had a fantastic start to its 2023 recruiting class; it ranks among the best in the nation as we approach the 2022 regular season.

That class is great and C.J. Carr awaits in next year’s class, but what about the 2023 recruiting cycle at quarterback for Notre Dame? After going all in on Dante Moore and falling short (thanks a lot, Oregon), do the Irish end up with a quarterback this cycle or hold off?

Here are the quarterbacks Notre Dame has offered scholarships to this cycle, where they’ve committed, and who may remain for the Irish.

Arch Manning

Arch Manning is a five-star quarterback from New Orleans. If his last name sounds familiar, it should be. He’s the latest in the long line of quarterbacks in his family. His grandfather is Archie. His uncles are Peyton and Eli, and his dad is Cooper, the brother that had to stop playing football at a young age. This Manning is viewed as the top recruit by most in the 2023 class. Notre Dame offered Arch, but wasn’t in real contention for his services. Manning is currently committed to Texas.

Malachi Nelson

Malachi Nelson was once committed to Oklahoma, but soon after Lincoln Riley departed Norman for Los Angeles, Nelson flipped his commitment to USC. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Nelson is a five-star talent from Los Alamitos High School in Los Angeles.

Dante Moore

Dante Moore seemed to be the most realistic possibility for Notre Dame on this list and the five-star prospect from Detroit was one of the nation’s top 10 players according to multiple outlets. After Notre Dame appeared to lead for his commitment, Moore wound up taking a visit to Oregon, ultimately falling in love with the school and program, and committing to the Ducks.

Nicholas Iamaleava of Downey, California, was offered by Notre Dame but won’t be a Fighting Irish quarterback as he’s already committed to Tennessee.

Jackson Arnold

Notre Dame was believed to be in the running for Arnold, a prime quarterback prospect from Denton, Texas, but the high school teammate of Irish commitment Peyton Bowen instead announced he plans to play his college ball at Oklahoma.

Christopher Vizzina

— Christopher Vizzina (@vizzina2) January 21, 2022

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Christopher Vizzina of Birmingham at one point appeared to be Notre Dame’s backup plan for Dante Moore, but the Irish are out as Vizzina has committed to Clemson.

Avery Johnson

9-2🙏 https://t.co/kTJ680fb7k

— Avery Johnson (@avery2johnson) November 18, 2020

The four-star prospect from Maize, Kansas, had over 20 offers and committed to Kansas State in the summer of 2022. Notre Dame offered Johnson on July 27, 2021.

Austin Novosad

After a great conversation with coach @Marcus_Freeman1, I am blessed and excited to say I have received an offer from the University of Notre Dame!☘️@T_Rees11 pic.twitter.com/c2XTVO4oVw

— Austin Novosad (@Austin2novosad) July 11, 2022

Novosad has been a Baylor commitment since December of 2021 but that seemed to get a little bit rocky as Notre Dame and Ohio State extended offers this summer. Novosad did a little sniffing briefly but reaffirmed his commitment to Baylor shortly after.

Kenny Minchey

Thankful to recieve an offer from the University of Notre Dame☘️#Elite3🔺@T_Rees11 @Marcus_Freeman1 @RileyElite3 @_Elite3 @PopePrepFB @SWiltfong247 pic.twitter.com/29rB7fErlp

— Kenny Minchey (@kenny_minchey) July 30, 2022

Kenny Minchey committed to Pitt since April but after a strong showing at the Elite 11 camp earned an offer from Notre Dame. Tommy Rees and Marcus Freeman have continued recruiting the Tennessee quarterback and he recently announced he was no longer committed to Pitt. Could Minchey end up being the man for the Fighting Irish?

FWIW – Minchey attends the same high school that produced all-time Notre Dame great Golden Tate.

Roch Cholowsky

After a couple of conversations with the coaching staff I’m excited to announce I’ve received an offer from the University of Notre Dame to play both football and baseball. @NDFootball @NDBaseball pic.twitter.com/TJljR5QyLF

The prized baseball product also stars at quarterback at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz. He only reports two football scholarship offers (Notre Dame and New Mexico State).
