How fast can you promote in the Air Force? ›

E-2 is eligible for promotion to Airman First Class (E-3) with 10 months' time-in-grade. E-3 is eligible for promotion to Senior Airman (E-4) in as little as 18 months or up to 24 months' time-in-grade (depending on earlier promotions).

Applicants must be between 17 and 42; meet the mental, moral and physical standards for enlistment; and speak, read and write English fluently. As a member of the Air Force, Lawful Permanent Residents may qualify for naturalization based on military service.

All enlisted military members agree to an initial eight-year MSO upon taking their oath of service. For instance, if a member completes four years of active-duty service and subsequently separates, they are obligated to fulfill the remaining four years in the IRR.

The quickest way to rank up in the Air Force is just to be an exemplary Airman and go beyond what is expected of you when on duty and off duty. You can only promote as fast as the system allows though, as each grade will require a minimum time in service and minimum time in grade before someone can be promoted.

It normally takes 18 years to advance from step 1 to step 10 within a single GS grade if an employee remains in that single grade.
